Description
For sale is a stunning and substantial Late Cornflower vase by William Moorcroft, dating between 1925-1935. Decorated with eight large cornflowers in pinks and purples, the vase absolutely explodes with colour. Contrasting wonderfully against a white background, it displays extremely well and is an eye catching centre piece. At 9 inches or 23cm tall and with a circumference of almost 20 inches or 50cm, this is a fabulous size and worthy of any discerning collection.
Background to Late Cornflower Design
The design dates between 1925 and 1935, a period when Moorcroft’s work was characterized by a transition from the Art Nouveau influences of his earlier designs to the more simplified and modern styles that became popular in the 1930s. The “Late Cornflower” design reflects this blend of intricate floral motifs with the evolving modern aesthetic of the time.
Condition
Offered for sale in very good condition, this vase has no restoration, but does have a small u-shaped “bruise” crack to the foot rim. It extends just less than an inch under the foot rim. The only hint of its existence when on display is a small hairline about 1cm long from the base. The rest is under the foot or hard to detect with the naked eye. Magnified photograph provided. Pricing is reflective of this. Apart from this, the rest of the vase is perfect, only having crazing which is very normal for early Moorcroft pieces. It has the William Moorcroft full signature in blue, and the Moorcroft, Made in England stamps.
Considering the size and rarer pattern of Late Cornflower, this is a super choice for the Moorcroft collector. You will not be disappointed adding this level of quality and colourway to your collection.
