In 1873, Arthur Barlow crafted this remarkable Doulton Lambeth ewer, a testament to his exceptional skill and artistic vision. Notable for its generous proportions, it is adorned with intricate scrolling beadwork, florette roundels, and elegant foliate designs. Characteristic of Barlow’s style, it features his distinctive banding in the background, adding depth and texture to the piece. The top of the ewer is crowned with a solid sterling silver lid, which is original and was crafted in London in 1873 by the esteemed silversmiths Richards & Brown.

Arthur Barlow was a pivotal figure at Doulton Lambeth, known for his innovative designs and meticulous craftsmanship. Despite his significant contributions, his life was tragically cut short. Barlow died young, his health compromised by injuries sustained during his boyhood, which continued to afflict him throughout his life. His untimely death was a profound loss to the world of decorative arts, but his legacy endures through his exquisite creations.

The Barlow family was integral to the success and artistic reputation of Doulton Lambeth, with several members contributing their talents to the studio. Arthur Barlow, known for his innovative beadwork and foliate designs, was a key figure until his untimely death. His siblings also made significant contributions: Florence Barlow specialized in naturalistic designs, particularly bird and floral motifs, which brought a delicate and vibrant touch to the stoneware. Hannah Barlow, another prominent artist, was celebrated for her etched animal scenes, often depicting horses, cats, and other wildlife with remarkable detail and liveliness.
