Description
It is hard to know where to start to describe the quality and features of this wonderful vase. Designed by sought-after artist Florence Barlow (sister of Hannah Barlow) and collaborated on by fellow artist Emily Stormer, this is a fantastic double-artist vase. Decorated with two artworks that depict finches within beaded oval borders, the skill and realism is remarkable. Around the oval borders, Emily Stormer executes striking designs, taking on the nouveau influences emerging in the 1890s. She creates swirling beadwork patterns supported by incised decoration in the most lovely browns, dark blues, light blues, light greens and white accents. These bring to life what is an extraordinary vase and a true statement of Victorian Doulton at its best! Rare to find such pieces, but rarer still to find the original lid accompanying the vase too! The bottom stem to the foot and the lid are then patterned in a repeated blue leaf shape with central-line beading to bring cohesion to the top and bottom of the vase.
In amazing original and unrestored condition, the piece absolutely shines as can be seen in the photos. Marked to the base is the Doulton Lambeth “cog” stamp and “England” dating this piece to around the early 1890s. Florence Barlow’s and Emily Stormer’s initials as well as those of assistants are present and correct. The lid also bears Emily Stormer’s matching signature and vase number. For absolute clarity, the only condition aspect I can note is a tiny nibble to an inside edge of the lid, which is not seen externally. The quality and presence of this vase will most certainly delight the collector and it is a signature centre piece for any collection!
