Doulton Lambeth Horses Tyg by Hannah Barlow

For sale is a rare and extremely well preserved, early Hannah Barlow Horses Tyg. These early pieces are to be fully appreciated for their simplicity of design and adornment and display incredibly well. On the body of the tyg, we have three horses executed in a rich blue sgraffito (really lovely variation on the usual black sgraffito). The horses are in various poses in grassland with one horse cantering, the other eating grass and the third looking at the tyg holder! The elegant handles curve down to the base and are decorated with sample foliate markings, also in blue. To the top rim, we have a solid silver rim marked London, 1872, giving us the precise age of the piece.

Offered in excellent original condition, the vase has a couple of small manufacturing imperfections that do not detract from the piece. In early Doulton manufacturing, the kilns had challenges with soot spatter and there is one near the hooves of one of the horses and a couple inside the vase. This in my opinion only speaks to the very early period when Doulton were still refining their quality procedures in kiln firing and therefore adds to the story and charm of the piece.

Fully marked to the base with the early oval Doulton Lambeth stamp and Hannah Barlow’s famous initials “HBB”. An absolutely stunning addition for the collector interested in the early, founding works of the Doulton Lambeth Pottery!
