Doulton Lambeth Arthur Barlow Putti Bowl

For sale is an exceptionally high quality Doulton Lambeth bowl, dating 1875. Made by renowned early artist Arthur Barlow, he was the brother to similarly famous Hannah Barlow. The bowl is intricately decorated to the body in typical, rich 1870’s style, with strong influences from George Tinworth. This can be observed by the beaded scrollwork around the circumference, and the two cherub-like putti emerging from trumpeted flowers. The putti are highly likely the work of Tinworth or John Broad, known to add collaboration design to other artists’ pieces. The colours and rich glaze are glorious. The blues are vibrant, and the purple tones so, so alluring.

At 30cm wide, and 15cm high, the bowl has real presence and would grace any serious collection very well, not to mention be a stand out piece on a sideboard or mantle.

The bowl is presented in outstanding condition with no chips or hairlines. There has been a minor, invisible restoration to the top rim, but overall this terrific piece has survived it’s 148 years incredibly well. Stamped “Doulton Lambeth” in the early oval mark with 1875. Also present is Arthur Barlow’s signature, “ABB”. All is present and correct. An amazing, and incredibly rare piece.

Background on Arthur Barlow

Arthur Barlow is an important early artist for Doulton Lambeth collectors. He was one of the first artists to join the studio, shortly after George Tinworth. Injured as a boy, he never recovered and spent most of his young adult life in considerable pain. Despite this, he found respite in keeping busy on art pottery, and he was very gifted. The image below is a photograph of the roundel plaque above the Doulton Lambeth front doors. In it we see Arthur Barlow, together with Henry Doulton, George Tinworth, Frank Butler and his sister Hannah Barlow.

Being dated 1875, the piece was made just a couple of years before Arthur Barlow sadly succumbed to his illness and passed away. Since he died young and he is such an important contributor to the early Doulton Lambeth story, a number of his pieces are displayed at the Victoria & Albert museum for the public to see.
