Description
For sale is this very cute miniature dish, likely to have been made by Edwin Martin, the youngest of the Martin Brothers. These small pieces were used to test the shelves in the kilns as well as ensure an even spread of pieces in the kiln. This was seen to create better firing results overall for the larger pieces.
This dish has a beautiful light blue to the body, with a spotted border decoration beneath the rim. Inside the dish is a rough texture, which is rather tactile – almost like you could light a match were you to strike it to the interior!
The dish is beautifully marked despite its size! Marked beneath “Martin Bros London + Southall”. Above are the kiln position numbers “N1” and “N14”. This numbering was very typical to specify where it was in the kiln. Likely to be a Edwin Martin piece, it is also marked “1908” to specify its date of production.
An endearing little piece of Martin Brothers history to add to your collection!
Martin Brothers pottery is one of the most famous and sought after potteries from the United Kingdom. Four highly eccentric brothers operated their pottery from the latter part of the 19th century into the early 20th century. Famous for their wally birds, face jugs and aquatic scenes, their pieces have an authenticity and a creativeness that is truly unique – often with a darker side as they explored the grotesque!
