Martin Brothers Salt-Glazed Miniature Blue Vase (1895)

This striking miniature vase, measuring 9.5cm in height by 8cm in width, is a fine representative example of Martin Brothers’ mastery of form and atmospheric glazing. Crafted in late 1895, the vessel exhibits a classic bulbous ovoid profile that gently tapers to a short, defined neck and a subtly everted rim.

The body is enveloped in a rich, textured cobalt blue salt glaze. The surface displays remarkable depth and variation, characterized by mottled lighter blue speckling, subtle tonal shifts, and a distinctly tactile, semi-matte finish. This deep blue exterior contrasts effectively with the pale, unglazed stoneware tone visible at the upper lip and interior edge.

Incised clearly to the base is the date mark “12-95” alongside the renowned signature, “Martin Bros, London & Southall,” definitively dating its production to December 1895.

The vase presents in excellent, unrestored original condition, completely free from structural damage or modern repairs. Notably, the lower section features a distinct, textural kiln spatter spot. This natural inclusion is a hallmark of the volatile salt-glaze firing process utilized at the Southall kilns. Rather than a detraction, this characteristic firing artifact confirms the piece’s authenticity and adds a unique, historical imprint oft valued by serious collectors of British art pottery.
