Description

For sale is this gorgeous, Eventide squat vase by William Moorcroft, dating to 1928 or soon thereafter. Decorated with large and small trees in the wondrous evening red/amber colourway, it is a wonderful vase that displays extremely well due to the angles of the vase under cabinet lights!

Background to Eventide Design

The Eventide pattern prominently features a landscape scene, typically showcasing a moody, twilight setting and is characterized by its depiction of trees and often includes a setting or rising sun, casting a warm, glowing effect over the scene. It is one of the most sought after rare designs.

The trees in the Eventide pattern are often depicted with elongated trunks and branches that spread out artistically across the pottery surface. The foliage and branches tend to have a semi-abstract appearance, contributing to the pattern’s ethereal quality. The color palette used in the Eventide pattern is one of its most striking features. It usually includes rich, autumnal hues such as deep reds, oranges, browns, and golds. These colors evoke the ambiance of a serene evening, with the warm tones of sunset enhancing the tranquil mood.

The foreground and background of the scene often have a gradient effect, transitioning from darker shades at the base to lighter, more radiant colors toward the top, mimicking the natural transition of light during dusk.

Eventide Glazing

The Eventide pattern utilizes the distinctive Moorcroft glazing technique, which involves layering glazes to achieve depth and a lustrous finish. The design is outlined in a tube-lining method, where the outlines of the trees and other elements are raised, giving a three-dimensional texture to the surface. The glazes are then applied meticulously within these outlines, creating vibrant and dynamic color effects. The overall finish is glossy, enhancing the richness of the colors and the intricate details of the design.
