Description
Offered for sale is this very early 1871-1872 gourd vase by the famous Arthur Barlow. Arthur was brother to the famous Hannah Barlow. Extremely disabled from an accident as a child, Arthur Barlow found his purpose and explored his gifts at Doulton Lambeth. He became one of the sought after artists representing often the best of the early 1870s work. He died young in 1877, so his work is rare.
His style and techniques are clearly shown in this wonderful, simple piece. With bold classical shapes to the main body, and spade-shaped leaves pointing upward, it’s a gem. Arthur loved doing detailed lined bandings to his pieces and three bandings sit at the foot, the top of the gourd section and the base of the neck. The browns decorations on close inspection have a hint of deep blue blue to them, which adds to the interest of this piece. The neck has bold parallel incisions all the way up to the rim to finish the decoration.
In excellent and unrestored condition. The vase is clearly marked with the early oval Doulton Lambeth stamp and the artists initials “ABB” beneath the foot. I think Arthur Barlow is a “must have” for the serious Doulton Lambeth collector. This incredibly original, early piece will delight the buyer.
Arthur Barlow’s work is displayed at the V&A in Kensington, London. Please click on the image to visit his work:
