Description

Early Arthur Barlow Doulton Lambeth Stoneware Jug with Silver Lid, 1874

An Important Early Arthur Barlow Design

This striking stoneware jug was made at Doulton Lambeth in 1874 and decorated by Arthur Barlow (1850–1877). It dates from the formative years of the celebrated Lambeth Art Pottery studio and represents the work of one of Doulton’s most talented early artists.

Arthur Barlow joined the Lambeth pottery in the late 1860s and quickly became one of its leading decorators. Alongside his sister Hannah Barlow and other pioneering artists, he helped transform everyday stoneware into highly decorative art pottery. His work played an important role in establishing Doulton’s reputation during the Victorian period.

Although his career was tragically short, Barlow left behind an impressive body of work. Today, collectors value his early dated pieces for both their rarity and their artistic quality.

Arthur Barlow’s Distinctive Decorative Style

Arthur Barlow developed a style that was very different from that of his sister Hannah. Rather than focusing on finely incised animal scenes, he preferred bold botanical decoration with strong sculptural form.

His designs often feature raised slip decoration, flowing leaves and carefully balanced compositions. Rich cobalt blues, warm ochre tones and subtle grey stoneware grounds appear throughout his work. These colours, combined with crisp modelling, create pieces full of depth, movement and texture.

This jug is an excellent example of his mature decorative style during the early 1870s.

A number of his pieces are displayed at the Victoria & Albert museum for the public to see. Here is one example below. Please click on the image to visit the V&A.

A Beautifully Decorated Victorian Jug

The jug has an elegant rounded body that rises to a tall tapering neck. A substantial loop handle balances the form, while the original silver-mounted hinged lid completes the design.

The decoration is both bold and refined. Deep cobalt blue foliate motifs stand out against a soft grey ground. Raised leaves create dramatic shadows across the surface, giving the decoration a wonderfully sculptural quality.

Sweeping ochre bands divide the design into flowing panels. Each band is bordered by finely applied beaded slip decoration, showcasing the exceptional skill of the Lambeth decorators. Around the shoulder, a scalloped collar provides an attractive transition between the body and the neck while adding further texture.

The silver mounts complement the pottery beautifully. The domed lid features embossed decoration and a pierced gallery, while the elegant thumbpiece reflects the high standard of Victorian silversmithing. Together, the ceramic body and silver fittings create a refined and highly decorative piece.

Marks

The underside retains all the expected factory marks. These include the impressed Doulton Lambeth oval mark with the date 1874, Arthur Barlow’s impressed “ABB” artist’s initials, and the accompanying assistant decorators’ marks. These marks firmly confirm both the date and attribution of the jug.

Provenance & Condition

The jug remains in excellent overall condition. The stoneware body is free from any significant damage, and the relief decoration remains crisp with excellent colour throughout.

The silver-mounted hinged lid is present and functions as intended. We note that adhesive has been used historically to secure the silver mount to the ceramic top rim. This is an old repair that does not detract from the appearance or display of the piece.

Early dated Arthur Barlow works are increasingly sought after, particularly examples that are adorned with silver mounts and complete factory marks. This jug is a fine example of his craftsmanship and an excellent addition to any serious collection of Doulton Lambeth art pottery.
