Product Overview This exceptionally rare early Doulton Lambeth stoneware piece is a masterwork by George Tinworth, Doulton’s first named artist. Crafted around 1872 when Tinworth was just 29 years old, the vessel features his signature seaweed scroll decoration combined with prominent raised beadwork and floral rosettes. The design is notably larger, bolder, and more raw in its execution than his later refined works, reflecting the fresh creative vigour of early Victorian art pottery. Measuring approximately 26.5 cm in height and 15 cm in width, the pitcher displays soft buff clay tones beautifully offset by classic cobalt blue and sage green glazes.

About the Artist: George Tinworth George Tinworth was the pioneer artist of the Doulton Lambeth studio, helping transform the factory from an industrial stoneware producer into an internationally celebrated art pottery hub. Known for his expressive modelling and organic relief work, Tinworth earned wide acclaim throughout the late 19th century. Crucially, Tinworth signed this piece beneath the base. Around 1874, Sir Henry Doulton granted Tinworth special permission to sign directly on the decorated exterior surface—a unique honour that makes base-signed examples key reference pieces for early Doulton Lambeth collections.
