Antique Doulton Lambeth Pitcher by Mark V. Marshall, 1880

This superb Doulton Lambeth stoneware pitcher dates to 1880 and showcases the outstanding work of Mark V. Marshall. It combines bold relief decoration with rich his artistic approach and helped create some of the most recognisable stoneware of the Victorian period. This pitcher captures that transition perfectly and offers collectors an excellent Victorian colour. Deep cobalt blue, cream, ochre and soft violet glazes create a striking display. The central panel features beautifully modelled plums and foliage, while delicate beaded borders frame the decoration above and below. The lower section displays relief carving with a strong Martin Brothers influence. This distinctive style is no surprise, as Marshall worked for the Martin Brothers before joining Doulton. Condition

The pitcher remains in very good overall condition, however a professional restorer has repaired much of the handle, including both the upper and lower joins. The repair is stable and presents well. The asking price reflects this restoration, making the pitcher an attractive opportunity for collectors who value rarity, design and artistic importance.

Provenance

The base carries all the correct factory marks. These include the Doulton Lambeth impressed stamp, Mark V. Marshall’s incised initials and the registered design number for the shape. It also bears the impressed mark of the thrower together with the incised signature of Marshall’s assistant. These marks confirm the pitcher’s authenticity and firmly date the piece to 1880.

This impressive pitcher combines outstanding craftsmanship, documented provenance and the unmistakable style of one of Doulton Lambeth’s greatest artists. It will make a fine addition to any collection of Victorian art pottery or British decorative arts.
